Say What blog hop

Say What??

I thought I had a PLAN with this blog hop, but it fell apart.

A lady at our church wanted me to add a name to a quilt she already had for a great-grandbaby and I said OK at first, but then she brought it and it was an antique hand quilted quilt! plus the border was scalloped and too skinny for me to add letters plus I really didn’t want to touch an antique quilt already made nor do embroidery on it, so I might have to MAKE her a quilt from scratch!

Then last week I got the reminder for the hop and I panicked! BUT then I had an idea…..

to use my selvedges!! My bin is pretty full!! But what???

Potholders! Because I made my husband some black PIZZA potholders for Christmas, because we make pizza on the grill and it’s SUPER hot, so our other potholders are pretty nasty and guess what? The pizza potholders are already destroyed too!! These selvedge ones would be thicker and with the selvedges they shouldn’t wear out so quickly!!

So I cut out 4 batting squares roughly 8 1/2″ (to be trimmed later)

and set to work, it was a bit tricky to add tiny pieces at the corners first, but after a while it went fast!

soon I had all 4 covered

to protect my cutting mat and also to check on the batting pieces, I flipped the blocks over and cut from the back and trimmed them to 8 1/2″ squares.

Don’t they look nice?

I also cut out 4 pieces of insulbright! and I laid the front on top of those and top stitches on top of the sewn lines, about every 2nd or 3rd row, both to hold down the insulbright but also to sort of flatten it all

Then I sewed them together and whip stitched the opening closed- because it was too thick to go under the sewing machine foot!

We don’t hang up potholders anymore so I didn’t bother with a hanging tag.

Here’s the PIZZA potholders, one side is completely burnt thru and the other side has the Pizza word melted!

(note to self….not to do machine embroidery)

Hopefully these potholders should last more than a few months! and maybe I can make some NICE ones for ME!!???

And what else can I make with selvedges?? pincushions? a scrappy quilt? I should try something, I do have a pattern called “Contained” which I might try with selvedges.

  1. Sounds like you should be using silicone potholders or mitts because the silicone won’t get burned, but you still have to be careful of the cotton fabric part on them. Around the Bobbin sells patterns and silicone refills for potholders, mitts and trivets. I love the ones I made with the silicone! But I do love the selvage look of potholders and yours do look great! I also made some purses using selvages for my projects on this blog hop. Happy sewing and pizza baking!

  2. Wow, you were serious when you said your other potholders were worn out. LOL!! Fun project with selvedges. I have a big tub of them as well, but haven’t done anything with them. So when do all of us bloggers get to come over for pizza? LOL!!

  3. I wouldn’t want to touch someone else’s antique quilt either…scary! I love pizza, but have never made it on a grill. Guess that gets added to my list of things to try, though by the looks of those used potholders, I better watch out for the hot grill. I love the idea of using selvedges for the pot holders. They look so cute!

  4. Wow, those Pizza ones really did take a beating! I agree that the selvedges should last a bit longer, but take the rough treatment. Thanks for sharing what you did and how you did it.

  5. LOL — my quilted potholders are getting stained and scorched but not to the extent of your pizza pads! I made a tote bag out of selvedges. It turned out to be very heavy (if I do this again I will omit the foam interlining). Meanwhile I continue to save selvedges and have four gallon ziploc bags of them waiting for inspiration (or desperation) to strike.

  6. I have hot pads similar to your poor “PIZZA” ones; they just don’t last with the manly cooking around here. The new hot pads look sturdy!

  7. Great idea for the selvages and the words. I keep saving mine but never do a thing with them. Now I have a great idea/project.

  8. Love these potholders! I have never saved the selvage before but I’m going to start. I love how they look sewn together. Thank you for the tutorial

  9. boy oh boy those potholders took a hit. Love the idea of using selvages for your replacement pads. I have a question regarding the melted embroidery. Could you do that type of stitching with Cotton thread instead of the standard embroidery threads?

A very nice pivot for the hop! Like the idea that the selvedges might be a bit tougher – I hope they stand up. I have saved some but have yet to play…this is a good idea for them!

  11. Now they will come in handy for sure! And hopefully won’t end up like the pizza ones 🙂 xx
