Orphan blocks turned into mini quilt

Remember on my 2020 list I had some monthly orphan blocks I thought I was going to donate?

Then I saw on my friend Turid’s blog, mini blocks turned into mini quilts– she’s the queen of mini quilts and anything tiny!! and it hit me that I should try to turn these blocks into mini quilts.

This must be April – showers 🙂 I used scrap batting and whatever FQ I had around that matched for the back AND scrap binding strips- it would take a big of searching to find some that are long enough as the blocks were either 10″ or 11″ so a WOF wasn’t enough, it was more like 1 1/4 strips, so if I had leftover binding strips where I really miscalculated on it, I’d use that!

It was fun to sit with my walking foot and my regular machine and just kind of mindlessly quilt these.

Notice my Bee label??

I am guessing this was January!? I think the reason I stopped doing these blocks was that I didn’t love my fabric choices in all of them, but it was still fun to work on FPP skills!

May flowers?

and February LOVE! (maybe the flower was March? or I did something with the March block or never made it??)

I’m very happy that these are done, they would make fun gifts or I might try to sell them at a local craft show I’m going to in April. I am thinking they could be hung up or used as coasters?? that might be a shame, but you gotta use them right??

Either way, I’m happy I made these into mini quilts, now I have that in my mind for other orphan blocks!

  1. Love the mini quilts! It’s a great idea and I have some blocks myself that I plan to use like this. I am so happy to be back receiving your blog – I couldn’t get it for a while and now it’s back! Yay!

    1. Hmm that’s odd, I’ve been getting comments…. but for some reason I got my blog post as an email this morning too, though I wouldn’t have signed up myself 😉

  2. Great way to use orphan blocks, thanks for the idea. Your mini quilts are lovely.

I like what you did with those! I sure do have a few, and was thinking of doing Gail’s Round Robin but I haven’t. Maybe I will go this way with some of them.

  5. I love your mini quilts Bea. And what a cute label. Thanks for your kind words. Just now I’m making quiet book pages. Maybe you should try that too?

    1. yes it’s a Foundation paper piecing pattern for all of these, I forget where I got it, it was free for that specific month, google snowglobe paper piecing pattern. I don’t even think I have it anymore so I couldn’t tell you.
