Tips on creating a QUBE quilt from a picture

Did you see the blog post for Accuquilt I made the other day?

Sometimes I look at quilt books and want to QUBE them, so I get out a book like this one and browse for ideas

Here is a pattern called Blue moon which is a free download on Mccall’s website

Now this one is a scrappy version and the blocks are BIG, but either way I made a version in EQ and modified the block size to fit QUBE dies.

I looked at the block and if the block was 12″ then the outer star tips would be made with the 12″ QUBE, that’s easy, the middle part would be 6″ and I could make that with the 4″ QUBE and compaion set, the corner square has a little  block in it too which would need to finish 3″ so that can be made with the 6″ QUBE, so VOILA! easy!!

I set to work cutting out all the pieces. (for more detailed cutting directions, look at Accuquilt’s blog)

I used this fun blue patriotic print and solid white.

Here is most of the top sewn together, the “tricky” part was making sure most of the print writing was right side up, but that was really a judgement call as the text was all over the place.

The quilt finished 44″ x 44″ and I quilted  a star meandering design all over it.

I always like to use leftover fabrics from the top for the backing, here I had plenty of the blue print and then I added some solid blue to the button, cut up the middle (not exact but deliberately to the side) and added another blue chunk in the middle.a

It was a fun quilt to make and I love looking at other designs for inspiration, I have thought of about making a class or a PDF for that, but to me it’s so easy so I don’t see the need, but maybe there is a need? I don’t know….
