Mystery QAL clue #5

Happy Veteran’s day BTW, I totally forgot!

It’s time for clue #5!

last week we finished all the blocks so now it’s time to put them all together!

for the sashing we cut in the beginning (40) 8 1/2″ x 2″ rectangles of fabric C and the (16) 2″ squares of fabric E

I may as well show you the quilt now!!

when adding sashing strips and corner stones I might to it differently than “normal” but there’s a reason!!

First I grab all the blocks that are NOT on the first row and add the sasing to the top of these

Looks like this

then I add the cornerstone square to the rest of the sashing strips- there will be 4 sashing strips leftover

and at first just add everything to the design wall like this just to visually see everything

Then I add the sashing with the cornerstones to the blocks on the right side of the blocks, these are the blocks that are NOT on the top row NOR the right column, I did add the leftover sashing to the top row EXCEPT the very right top block- CLEAR AS MUD RIGHT??

The reason I do this, instead of just simple rows, is that it’s easier to fudge the pieces to fit and nothing really to eyeball, and no pins!

now sew these all together, the top should be 46 1/2″ x 46 1/2″

Now for the borders! You should have 6–3 1/2″ WOF strips of fabric A

6–2 1/2″ WOF strips of fabric B

and 5–2″ WOF strips of fabric C

The inner border is fabric C like the sashing and the 5th strip I cut into quarters so approx 10″ or so each and added to the remaining 4 strips then trimmed 2 to 46 1/2″ and added to the sides, the other 2 are 49 1/2″ and added to the top and bottom

Fabric C is 2 strips 49 1/2″ and 2 that are 53 1/2″

Fabric A is 2 strips 53 1/2″ and 2 strips that are 59 1/2″

I made this for Anja’s birthday the 15th!

I quilted swirly hearts all over it in white thread

Are any of you sewing along?

Dear Bea, I am working right along with you and loving it. I really liked the smaller pinwheel. It was a new block for me. I finished your fall leaf quilt and I will send along a picture soon. Wishing you and your family a wonderful Thanksgiving. I am really busy as I am the cook and hostess. It will be great to see all the family.
With lots of love and appreciation for all your hard work in doing these Quilt Alongs,
    Shelly
