EQ8 Tutorial Tuesday- Log Cabin blocks

I’ve been avoiding doing tutorials/videos for EQ8 as I couldn’t figure out how to easily do screenshots and copy paste them into a blog post without doing a whole lot of work, and videos require a quiet house and good internet, which I don’t have either- well hopefully in a few months we’ll have better internet and then it’s just a matter of a quiet house! but we’ll see

I had on my calendar that I needed to do an EQ tutorial today, so I figured I might as well google my problem and figure this out…..well I did find something! It’s called the “snippet” tool in Windows and it can custom cut/snip out anything on the screen instead of just prtSc, though that could work if you hold down windows and press PrtSc then it saves the file, but you still have to crop it, so I’ll see which method I like better!

If you follow my page on FB or follow me on IG, you might have seen over the weekend that I started a blue and white log cabin quilt!

I cut enough out with my Log Cabin die to make 20 blocks, so a nice 4×5 layout!

Here’s where EQ comes in handy!

If you search for blocks named “log cabin” you’ll get the first 50 that pop up, scroll to the side and there’s the more “traditional” blocks

For just design ideas, I just pick a block from the library and play with the colors, but the log cabin die makes a block that finishes 12″ and each log is 1″ finished, so you could design it from scratch if you want.

start with a 12″ block and have the snaps and graph at 12 also and then draw lines every inch

and keep going. It doesn’t take long at all.

You can color and insert it into a layout

It’s fun to sit and rotate and color blocks

Here I did random log colors and solid black on the other half and rotated the blocks so they “spin”.

I made this quilt a year ago here

You can also do a diagonal line called “furrow” layout

I did a similar one in Batiks in 2018 here

You can also do a layout where it “radiates” from the center and out!

I did that quickly in blue and white for my new project ( I know the bottom row is not white but more beige, I didn’t realize that until later)

In EQ there’s some fun tools to help you rotate/flip or randomize the layout, a fun one is called symmetry!

I then realized it was a 4×5 layout and now it looks a bit funky

So I played some more, I do like this layout!

and I like this layout too! I’ll make the blocks and see what I feel like when they are done!

So this wasn’t too much of a tutorial but more of a log cabin inspiration session!

I did pics from EQ and saved them, I used the screen capture and snippet tool, all worked pretty well.

Try playing with log cabins in EQ it’s fun!!

It is much easier to grasp tips, for ways to use the program, in small tutorials such as this 1.
Thank you for this tutorial. 😊

    1. thanks! I’m still trying to see if I like the picture tutorials or video ones better…. I have lots of my site here, look under the EQ8 or 7 tutorial tab

  2. Thanks for this Bea! I just got EQ8 for Christmas and appreciate any tutorials I see!
