EQ8 Tutorial Tuesday FPP blocks and printing

Some people don’t know that EQ has SO many Foundation Paper Piecing patterns in the library and you can easily edit them and the update with EQ8 vs EQ7 is that the foundation pattern prints in color now!

Let’s start

I have this quilt as a pattern in my shop called Starlight Starbright, I also made one with batiks from Island Batik when I was an ambassador for them but sadly I’ve lost the picture- I think when my blog moved to wordpress!?

This is the block, it’s a bit tricky and I don’t know the name of it, so no clue where I got it from, but I’ll show you different ways you can create it or something similar.

EQ8 has a whole FPP section, if it’s not in there, you can search for Kaleidoscope (or just Kaleido) I chose the blue and yellow one to “edit”

Or you can create your own polydraw block and choose octagon or Eight pointed star or kaleidoscope

You have to then polydraw each section like an applique shape, it’s a bit tedious, but doable.

I also searched for “star” and this one with the stripes was all the way at the end.

Back to the quilt and printing, when you are on the print /export tab, just click one block and you’ll see the options for printing, here’s it’s a foundation pattern.

This is what you’ll see, “sections” show that the block can print in 8 sections

If you click the numbering tab you can see the numbers of each section, if you were writing a pattern for this, go in an renumber section H as it’s not going from the center and out like the other sections, or maybe you want to alternate every other section to have it this way? that’s up to you

in the options tab you see the size of the block the style to print- if you just want line drawing/grayscale or color fill, I like the color fill, then I don’t have to “think” when sewing. If you want to be able to move the sections before printing you have to UNCHECK the “print as many blocks as fit” this is a 10″ block so you’ll need to move the pieces!!

otherwise you’d just print this and that doesn’t look right, but if that box is unchecked, you can move the pieces around

like this

you can also go back and make a custom sized block, here I did a 3″ block

it’s tiny but adorable!!

I’ve actually made a pincushion like this in rainbow colors!

It’s fun to do a foundation block that’s tiny or just ONE and make it a pincushion or a pillow 🙂
