EQ8 Tutorial Tuesday- Flying geese

Quilters often LOVE or hate Flying geese blocks!

I don’t know why, maybe because it’s all triangles? a quarter square triangle and 2 half square triangles? that’s a lot of bias edges and easy to stretch or skew when sewing together?!

I think Flying geese are fun and use them a lot, of course I love using Accuquilt dies for cutting them out, from any qube set it’s shape #4 for the QST (quarter square triangle) and shape #5 for the side triangles (half square triangles) and with Accuquilt dies, the dog ears are cut off, so they line up perfectly!!

There’s also other rulers and templates out there to make flying geese blocks.

In EQ8 when searching for “flying geese” the first 50 show up

scrolling to the right there’s a bunch of flying geese squashed together into a block, those are for borders and sashing! (the ones with the white background)

As you may know, a flying “goose” is twice as wide as it is tall!

On the bottom left here there’s just one, so it should be a 2″ x 4″ block (if we start with 2″ as a base for calculating) then the dark green should be 4″ x 4″, the blue is 4″ x 6″ and so on, so the orange one I count 8 flying geese, that would be 4″ x 16″

So let’s say I designed a quilt with 2×2 blocks each at 8″ and then added a 4″ border with just corner blocks.

I decided to add these star blocks that are based off of a 4×4 grid, so then on the border I just pop in the flying geese border block with 8 geese in it and VOILA! easy peasy 🙂

and with a diamond block in the corner and a bit of coloring fun I got this

another place to find flying geese in the EQ library is to go under section 10/sashing and there’s more flying geese like this

Maybe I thought those star blocks were too close together and wanted to add a 2″ sashing? then I grabbed that orange 9 flying geese block and added the sashing and swapped out the geese border like this.

and with the color swap tool it’s easy to make them all red and and white again

here I also turned off the grid lines

You can add the sashing as an inner border too just add another 2 flying geese on the border!

and wouldn’t this be adorable as a mini quilt? so far it’s 26″ but 13″ would be 1″ x 2″ geese and 4″ star blocks! that would be ADORABLE!!

I have left FB and I do miss my groups on there, but I am on MeWe instead and started an EQ group there if you want to join!
