EQ7 tutorial tuesday- illusions

beaquiltersEQ7tutorialtuesday

I’m so glad I got an email this weekend with a REQUEST for a tutorial, as I’ve been doing this for a while now and I’m sort of running out of ideas….

The request was this a recipe card quilt.

I’m not going to copy the whole thing but instead show how “hidden cards” or illusions can be created in EQ7

First start with a Vertical quilt

image

The default is 4 columns

that’s okay for now

on the layout tab you’ll see the “strips”

let’s leave the first strip PLAIN 9” wide

image

the 2nd one to half drop blocks (4) 9” wide (you can adjust that later)

and the 3rd strip into blocks (5)

I also changed the length to 54”

we’ll see how that looks

image

Now go into blocks and create a block like this

I did a block 9” x 9” and drew lines every 3” and one 3” square in the upper corner

image

Here I added it into the 2nd strip and created a matching 4th strip.

I added into every other block and alternated on the 4th strip, then added a plain 5th strip

image

then I rotated the blocks in the 4th strip twice

image

Now let’s play with the 3rd strip

This one layout I picked half drop blocks as well (though sewing it together I wouldn’t do it this way)

I created a block 2” x 9”

image

Then added them to the 3rd strip and rotated every other one twice

image

In blues Smile

image

Here I changed the block a bit instead of having each section be 3” I moved one line down to be 1” and then I added more strips and made the quilt bigger

image

NOTE, when cutting these, the sections in between, I would NOT follow the cutting directions

image

Here my section is 3 1/2” wide, so 4” cutting- that’s fine

but instead of cutting the dark blue 3 1/2” (3” when done, I’d cut it 6 1/2”, so 6” when done) and the blue, I’d cut 12 1/2” – 12” when done)

You can use the RULER to double check Smile

image

I just HAD to play with the dark blocks in between again and moved the line up to 6” of dark blue and put that as every other block on the layout, now it really looks hidden Smile

image

You get the idea! right?

If you try this technique or have designed you own quilt that’s an illusion similar to this, feel free to link up!
