Farmers QAL fabric info

I seem to have enough interest to start the Farmer’s WIFE sampler quilt as a QAL, so why not!? Well I want to do it anyways.

Most people who commented said to do one block a week so that means we probably won’t finish until the end of the year or early into next year- HOW CRAZY is that!!

I plan on using the 6″ QUBE which would make 9″ blocks so with a 1 1/2″ sashing and 3″ border, and 35 blocks, it will be 60″ x 81″ which is pretty much a TWIN! – I do see one block that needs one die from the 9in QUBE set and maybe from the 4″ set as well (or I’ll modify the block!?), but I’ll tell you the rotary cutting for that if you don’t have that die.

You can also just buy the book and follow along with the directions for the 6″ blocks then the quilt will be 45″ x 60″ which is also the same as using the 4″ QUBE set. Whatever QUBE set you decide to you, the blocks will be 1.5 times bigger. So a 12″ QUBE would make 18″ blocks, now that’s HUGE and the quilt be 105″ x 144″ LOL, so you might want to not make all 35 blocks but just pick a few to make a quilt whatever size you want or make them all and split them up into 2 quilts?

I’ll show the yardage for the 9″ blocks (6″ QUBE) and the 6″ blocks (4″ QUBE- which the book recommends) and I’m having a straight layout like this with sashing and borders, of course you can change that if you want.

Here’s the info for the 9″ blocks

(I’m adding about 1/4yd onto the yardage from what EQ tells me)

2yds dark blue

1 1/4yd blue

1 1/4yd light blue

1 1/4yd black

1yd grey

1 1/2yd white

without the border and sashing fabrics, I really think the blocks can be made with a FQ bundle of 24FQs! (I think!!) I’m tempted to try it!

For 6″ blocks you’ll need

1 1/2yd dark blue

1yd blue

1yd light blue

3/4yd black

3/4yd grey

1yd white

Of course you need fabric for the binding and backing for both quilts too!

You could also choose to do a scrappy version and just add a solid background for each block in white, grey or black, I’d add the “grey” color plus the “white” yardage together and let that be the constant in the quilt or make each block it’s own color? And then worry about a border later 🙂

I’ll order the fabrics and when I get them here I’ll start the QAL and post every Monday!

I’ll try to have a link-up after the first week, I think you can upload just a picture, not sure if you HAVE to have a blog post to link from, we’ll try it 🙂

When entering the layout in EQ8 what finished block size are you using? I am using 8” Qube set.

I’m in….now that I found the book, knew I had it, but have so many books, it kinda got lost in the mix. This is just the push I need. I bought this book just for this reason and life got in the way (or was it so many other patterns?) I do like all fabrics (surprise!) and have made everything from modern to colonial type , abstract and traditional so I am being pulled between the fabrics on the cover or brights….we shall see……

Excited! I think I am going to use the 4″ cube and make a few extra squares.
