Defenestration QAL step 1

It’s fitting that today is the beginning of the Defenestration QAL part one because today Solveig is getting her wisdom teeth pulled (not out the window!) and step 1 is CUTTING the fabrics!

I’m doing the BEE KIT and only using 6 fabrics (1/2yd of each) plus black instead of 12 FQs plus the background.

I always keep my projects in these nifty plastic bins, when I plan the project, after I cut the pieces and during the assembly process up until the top is done and even the backing too, then the bin is empty!

Here I got the dies out too from the 8″ QUBE set, dies # 1, 2, 5 and 8

Follow the chart in the part for the shape placement (and rotary cutting each shape) here because I used half a yard I folded the fabric in half then once sideways so there’s 4 layers of fabric on the die (my GO BIG can do 8 layers but I like keeping it this way because the fabric piece is so big)

The selvedge edges should always be horizontal to your belly, so going side to side inside the machine and again because the fabric is long I gently folded the other end almost into a roll so it fit thru my machine

Because I only used 6 fabrics I cut 32 of shape #8 of each of the 6 fabrics

I then moved to the side of the current cuts and cut shape #2 and shape #8- you’ll see in the pattern that it’s not an even number for each fabric for the #2 and #8 shapes, you can cut it all evenly or wait and cut more as needed, you just need 4 x 12 of shape #8 for the blocks, the rest of the #8 pieces are for the borders and it really doesn’t matter what fabrics are used.

Here I have all the pieces cut out, I chose to do 2×2 of white #1 squares for the borders of the borders because my background is black and I also DID NOT use the black text for any of the #8 shapes, we’ll see how it turns out!

Don’t forget to cut all the background #5 triangles too! I like to stack them in piles of 8 or 16 or whatever number of layers I have on the die and then lay them out in piles, then it’s easy to count 8,16,24,32…..

and back in the bin they all go including the leftover fabric! I don’t put any of those away until the quilt is completely done! because sometimes I used the leftover yardage to make a scrappy backing or maybe I mis-cut or mis-counted so it’s good to keep the fabrics with the project until it’s DONE!

Bee happy until next week!

(I’m not really sure how to do link ups, the last time I did it, it wasn’t ideal so if you want to share pictures you can share on IG and tag me @bealeequilter and maybe #defenestrationQAL or you can email me pictures and I’ll share in the next post.
