Modern Batik Challenge with Island Batik

Modern Batik Challenge

The theme for Island Batik ambassadors for May was MODERN!

I don’t think my normal quilts are totally modern, they are not traditional either, more of transitional!

One feature of a modern quilt is a lot of negative space so I tried my hand at that or at least that was my goal.

I had these 4  winter fabrics as a bundle (we’re all thinking winter now in May, right??), about 1/2yd each, the requirements this month was 36x40 or bigger so I figured I’d make 10 strips (10 1/2” cut) and the applique something on them and I got out my GO dies and found I had this snowflake die that I actually never used, so why not!!DSCF8182

At first I ironed heat and bond on the back of scraps and I wanted to cut out 2 of each fabric and then see what I’d come up with.

I ended up just using 5 snowflakes and places them around the top

Then I appliqued with a dark blue aurifil thread and my darning foot on the machine and did a double line around.

Once I had that done I wanted to have more modern quilting on it, to me modern is more dense quilting!

So I did a different filler design on each strip color

On the white I did pebbles- snowballs Winking smile

On the light blue I did a sort of circuit board design

on the blue deer I did a flame

and on the dark blue I did feathers!

Here’s the quilt all done!

I think it can go for modern! do you think so?

I am going to be starting a quilt for one of our granddaughters who is attending Murray State in Kentucky. The team is the Racers, so the wall quilt will have 4 horse heads. I have some questions about Heat and Bond. Does it make the quilt stiff? Does the needle get gummy? I used another product on a wall quilt for her sister and had both of those problems. Nancy A:
