Eq Tutorial Tuesday- Tumbler quilts

beaquiltersEQ7tutorialtuesday

This week I wanted to show some tumbler quilts in EQ7

inspired by the tumbler dies from accuquilt

You can create a tumbler quilt in EQ under ONE patch and pull down the menu and select tumbler.

I chose both height and width to be 6” like the large tumbler die.

and an 8 x 10 layout would look like this

If you want the tumbler rows to be the same, in one patch quilt option, select the trapezoid

here’s a rainbow version

and this one I’ve made from scraps leftover from a Mccall’s quilt a while ago

Now one thing I don’t like about either of these methods, is that the side blocks are cup off and not in half!

So I tried to come up with a way to make rows with a half tumbler on the sides.

First create a new block and have the width be 35 and the height be 6”

why??

I played around with it and it looked best if I had a tumbler be 6” wide at the widest point and 4” and the narrowest point, half of those numbers put together is 5” and x 7 just to have a nice un-even number.

image

Then I started at the 3” point on the top of the block and drew a line down to the 2” mark to form the angle of the side of the tumbler, then 4” next to that point from the top and down 6” from the previous point on the bottom and so on and filled up the whole row.

image

Then I created a horizontal strip quilt that’s 70” wide and 6” high for each row and each row had 2 blocks (35” each)

image

then added one of the tumbler blocks on the first block

image

and again next to it

image

but then flipped the block using the flip block on the right

image

and voila! it looks right

image

then filled in the quilt and flipped every other block

( flipping the 1st block on row 2, the 2nd block on row 3 and so on) to get this.

image

I also colored in one by one for a different look

image

If you are annoyed with the line down the middle just right click on the layout and UN-check outline patches and blocks

image

and it looks like this

this is also an option when you export a picture of it, but it may show a faint white line down the middle instead on the jpeg.

Have you made a tumbler quilt? or designed one?

interesting to see all the varieties here, comes at a good time for me as I plan to buy a tumbler template at the quilt show on friday, not for a machine like you as I do not have one of those but will use a cutting mat, rotary cutter etc

Hi Bea, do you put labels on the back of your quilts? If so, what pen would you recommend that you know what you right on your label you know will stay put? I appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks

AT least I have this block so I won't go spending money. I love how easy it is to sew together.
But you've given me some new ideas. Yay
thanks
