Ahhhh's are taking over

Most of you know that I now buy lots of fabrics on this group on facebook.
well, Tonya- the group owner, also makes hexie blocks!
recently she partnered with paperpieces.com and they are now making her custom sets, look here
Until the other day, I always thought the Ahhhh's just stood for the sound you made when you saw them, but it means Artistic Hexotic Hecic Hillbilly Hexagons.

Here's one as an example! finished 3" hexie

Now me and one other lady in the group have the PRIVILEGE of coloring these for Tonya before she posts, how fun!! this is just one of my samples

Here's my first sample! using Riley Blake Serenata fabrics

this one I made last night, same templates, totally different look!

This is another one I made, it's called conference call, not loving it, but it's fun to make!
and I have another one prepped and ready to go for this afternoon when I sit in the car line waiting for the kids at school

They come in these cute little envelopes :-)

Did I show this picture the other day btw??
Sonja checking her e-trade account! :-)
she's sick today and had a fever last night, had to go upstairs and sleep in her room with her because she kept waking up daddy too. it's going to be a snuggle day today I'm sure

saw this on FB the other day too, tulip farms in Holland!! cool quilt pattern huh?

THIS is me to a T!! ha ha, I try but my house is not perfectly clean, if you look too hard the dust bunnies will eat you.

Let me see how much I can applique on this McCall's quilt today while snuggling with Sonja maybe in the Maya wrap, poor girl

MMRR, QUBM and WOBBOW and snow

Lots of abbreviations here!! :-)

Here's a peek at the QUBM- Quilt you be mine Round robin

It's the last month, so we should all have our tops back before Valentine's

and Modern Mystery Round Robin started this month too

here's my block, a winding ways block

And here's the Bible BOW
Delilah!
how Delilah tricked Samson into telling her where he got his strength from- his hair
so the little triangles around the edges I picked to look like hair...
The center has the hanging clothes line, reminded me of the chains when Samson was chained to the pillars. To have it be more feminine and about Delilah, I picked the floral fabric.

The directions recommended foundation piecing, but since my block is 8" the tiny triangles were pretty easy to sew, by sewing 1 1/2" squares together diagonally and then trimming, though the long border strips got a little wonky, once they were sewn to the center, it kind of straightened out.

and we had snow friday- the schools had half a day- 11.30 but then it started snowing at 10, so they let out at 10.30, what a waste!
today they had a 2hr delay because it was freezing rain during the night.

Does anyone have some ideas for a T shirt quilt BTW??

Super busy, but can't show much

I really have been super busy this week.
Well, my kids were off monday for MLK, then off tuesday for teacher workday.
My son started getting a fever sunday-tuesday, tuesday morning I took him to the Dr, negative for the flu or strep, but I still kept him home wednesday.
Wednesday afternoon they called from the Dr. that the strep was positive! so I kept him home again today with a nasty cough too. Now it looks like we'll get snow tomorrow afternoon so the kids have early release at 11.30. Why even bother!? ha ha
NC schools are wimps....

Here's a few things I CAN show.
pot holders, using the winding ways Go! die, and Rhapsody of reds from Connecting threads

AND I got this idea too, sewing just the corner parts together 3 times

plus a little handle =

a cute little pin cushion :-)

And looks at SOMEONE's cute shoes!
I always thought it was silly to give shoes to babies, but I had these- BRAND new and lately Sonja has been Ms Cinderella with her socks.... so it HIT me to put shoes on her to prevent the socks from sliding off, it worked too! duh..... :-)

here's some funny quilty pics :-)

well you can read the list and see why I can't show much more.

My patterns for sale at Connecting Threads

I'm so happy to announce this!!
I've been working with Connecting threads on publishing some of my patterns there.
Here's the two patterns I've published

This FUN kaleidoscope quilt in these lovely batiks!

The 2nd is Berry Squares

Click HERE to see the patterns.
I'd love to know what you think and IF you buy the pattern, I'd also love feedback on the patterns of course!

Tutorial Tuesday EQ7 How to determine a FQ pattern

I had a "conversation" with a fellow blogger who said she had a hard time trying to figure out Fat quarter friendly patterns in EQ.

here's MY tip :-)

So I have this file already- I made a quilt using Riley Blake FQs a while ago

Of course you know how to preview fabric yardage??!!

I went back to the quilt and picked a random color and colored in parts of the block

then checked the yardage again and BINGO! 1/4yd

I tried to color the other part of the block on a different block

well it MIGHT work it says 3/8yd ( I know it works from when I made the quilt) if you aren't sure maybe sew a block together to test it

I even had the star block without the circle in the middle, but that also showed 3/8yd
but you see how I just colored the whole block.

Now another quilt, simple pinwheel and rail fence quilt

instead of going back and forth several times, I colored one block in blue and another in red, here I did 3 blocks in red, but it would be the same to color the "rails" in ONE block.

the blue shows 1/4yd and the red 1/8yd

see how it's the same to color one whole rail fence block

Now just to test it out I colored the whole pinwheel block red too

and the yardage is STILL 1/4yd

PLUS the dark red AND the purple is 1/4yd together

Now it's time to GUESS how many FQs I need, back to the main quilt

by just looking at the yardage it won't help

go back and color just the borders a different color

Now you see the yardage, the total for the pinwheels is 2yds =8 FQs
and for the pinwheels it's 2yds also. =8FQs

Let's double check.
Knowing that 1 FQ makes 1 pinwheel block, there's 17 block, so MAYBE we actually need more??
The rail fence block 1FQ= 2 blocks and there's 18 blocks so that's 9 FQs, that fits better
let's go back and add some more to the pinwheel block

here I colored 1 1/2pinwheel blocks green

yardage is still 1/4
how about 2 whole pinwheels then?

hmm, yardage is 3/8 so it MIGHT work, but not sure.

so if we stick with 1 1/2 pinwheels =1FQ then you'd need 11.3 FQs, so 12.
If you THINK you can fit 2 on a FQ, and there's 17 of them then 9FQs is enough.
You can even go in and look at the cutting directions.
let's just round up to 5" and a FQ is 18 x 20"
so you can fit 3 x4 squares on a FQ or at least 3 x 3 which is 9.
4 squares makes a pinwheel block, so easily 1 pinwheel blocks per FQ!
so I'd get 9FQs for 17 blocks
and 9 for the rail blocks

You can of course look at the cutting for the rail fence too, you get the idea.

Often bundles are at least 20 right, so that's PERFECT!
one bundle and yardage for borders and binding to make this quilt
