baskets and blocks from class

I wanted to show these cute baskets I made yesterday.
I found this pattern on my shelf and figured I'd try to make them.
the black one I made first, it was supposed to have handles but they got very bulky with this double batting inside, so I omitted them, then the bottom inside you can see the batting from the bottom circle even though I zig zagged around, so I made the purple one and for the lining, ironed up 1/4" or so and then after the bottom was added I stitched the lining to it with a straight stitch, not totally even since I did it from the inside, but I think next time I'll stitch from the outside, I don't know, maybe just leave it like the black one, that sure was easy! the handles on the purple I omitted the batting.
Gave these to my kids, my daughter thought it was a hat!! ha ha

I also wanted to show the progress of my little sampler class I have at my house.
2 of the 3 brought the blocks last night.
9 blocks made so far, it's fun to see them all different.
I like this blue and green matching set.

I also like this christmas holiday set
fun to see how different they each look.

customer fish quilt

today I got around to quilting a customer's fish quilt.
love the bright colors and I had to order new thread to have it match (bummer!? LOL)
a simpler block with striped tails and appliqued eyes, really cute!

I cut out a fin out of cardboard and traced that with washable marker and white chalk onto the fish, quilted on the lines and a small one inside each fish.
the square of the fish I did ruler work along the inside edge and also going down the middle right at the beginning of the stripes.
Did a dense meandering on the blue/turquoise background,
bubbles on the black border and a wave on the outside border.

look at this backing fabric too, isn't it cute?!

Drawing for sock monkey Go! kit

This evening I decided to cut out another "KIT" I have these scraps of sock monkey fabrics and matching fabrics. when I punched out the kit with my Go cutter, I figured I should do a drawing for this KIT!
details below.
This is what the quilt will look like when done.
should measure around 42" x 48"

this is a picture of the pieces for the blocks.
The light yellow is from two similar yellows the darker yellow is from ONE fabric.
The sock monkey fabrics for the triangle are just layered monkeys and then a matching red for the other triangles, for the squares it's randomly cut out from this light blue star fabric with the sock monkey riding a banana, they are not fussy cut, so some have no monkey, some have part of it etc, I think the randomness makes it cute.

So this is what you get!
an EQ printout of the quilt layout and one close up of the blocks.
All the pieces for the blocks, and 27" of the stacked sock monkey fabrics,
(if you make 5 binding strips 2 1/2" wide, the border can be 2 3/4" with 5 strips cut out as well.
that's up to you, how you want to cut it or use something else for the binding so you can have a bigger border.
There's also a few extra pieces cut out for OOPSIES :-)

Now here's what you have to do to be in the drawing.
1) post a comment with who you would give this quilt to if you get the kit.
2) post this on your blog and or facebook and comment here that you did and then post here that you did it.
3) be a follower

posting will be due thursday at midnight ( I will draw a name friday morning and put it in the mail if you email me back with your address etc quickly)

hopefully this will get me more traffic on my blog :-)
good luck

isosceles triangle quilt, FQ bird quilt and quilting

I've had a busy week this week, and mostly NOT quilting on sewing, but I did manage to squeeze SOME in :-)
My daughter is going to a birthday party this weekend, so I "HAD" to make another owl and portfolio set. :-) It worked out because I went with neighbors to 5 quilt stores tuesday for a quilt shop hop!
found these cute pink fabrics one sale, and the red I meant for my HST block swap but just had to use some with this set, it matched perfectly!

I finally also finished quilting this birdie quilt, somehow it got a bit stretched or skewed at the end when I quilted it, but I've trimmed it and once the binding goes on I think it will be okay...
I did a lot of dense quilting on it, at the end I just wanted it DONE- glad it's a small quilt.

again I was inspired by Leah Day ( actually got her TWO books in the mail yesterday, only had time to peek at them)
So, on the border I did 3 of her design ideas.
One was the Mesh curtain- hard to see on the turqouise fabric.
another was a mario vine on the brownish fabric- that was fun to do!
and lastly a fern on the birdie fabric.
On the birch fabric I just did a straight line and side ways to follow the trees.
(look at the backing picture)

On the blocks I did ruler work, curves, freeform curves etc. and bubbles on the sashing

here's the close up of the backing with the border design.

I also PIECED the isosceles triangle quilt top, my points don't match up perfectly, but I don't mind now, it was fun to make still and I tried to do a pretty random look without having the same fabrics touch.

portfolios, triangles, tic tacs circle quilt

Wanted to show these two sock monkey portfolios I made for a playdate this weekend.
We have some dear friends from our old church that moved back to TX 1 1/2 yrs ago, they came back to NC for a vacation and we met at a park to have the kids play, so I gave the boys these two portfolios :-)
The boys are not twins but really close in age- they liked them!

Yesterday I felt like using my go cutter, I had the idea for using the "isosceles" die ( however you spell it! then I thought I didn't have THAT much fabric to use and to sew strips together and then punch them out, but then I remembered this FQ pack I got from a quilt store on sale a while ago, a MODA pack- can't tell you the name of the pack though.
I looked in EQ and figured I could make a nice baby quilt out of it.
either 9 x 10 or 10x 9 wide, the 10 wide and 9 long is more square, I think 50 x 54, where the 9 x 10 will be 45 x 60 or something like that, it's 5" x 6" triangle, now saying 9 x 10, it's really 18 x 10.

I put a few up on the design wall in a somewhat ORDER, but I think I'll go with the more random effect, we'll see.

I finished sewing the binding and label on this circle quilt!

I quilted a straight line around the edges of the blocks and a curve around the circle, actually tricky on the long arm

and this is the label : "tic tacs and mints" like the title?
I think I mentioned it before, but the backing totally looks like tic tacs all over it and the circles on the front are the mints!

owl and cats

Wanted to show what I did today, or rather finished, well sort of.
I finished quilting this cat quilt

I really get inspired by leah day and her filler designs and always want to try something new.
This one is inspired by her echo shell designs

First I actually browsed her designs and saw the name of this called cat hairballs, I just HAD to use it.
so i used that for the pink borders
on the large black border I just did a boxy sort of line, thought the fabric was too busy for anything else.

on the 2nd cat I used a sort of trippy triangles, not sure if that's the one, when I looked back I couldn't find it, but it's close enough

After I had done the two top blocks, I wanted to continue with an alternate, soft curvey block and a hard edge block, so I did this circuit board design, it was actually lots of fun to do, I will do this one again! well they were all fun.

lastly I did this brain coral, sort of like the free motion meandering with an echo around it, I just did whatever, another fun one.
Leah Day! you inspire me :-)
also I did not touch the cats, so they sort of stand out like trapunto..

this is the back of it.

On another note
I finished stuffing the owl! isn't this a cute set?? my son wanted to help, so he can tell his friend from school that he helped :-)

here is the portfolio opened up, I will most likely get some crayons or something to go into it, in fact my daughter is having gymnastics right around the corner from a toy store in town...

a cute set :-)

more owls and kits

I'm getting back into the quilting groove after my tooth infection/ whatever it was.
these are a sampler of some of the kits I've made, I figured I needed a girly one!
I actually sat yesterday and tranfered the block from accuquilt to EQ7, I thought I had them somewhere, but it wasn't all of them and then I also played with layouts, some with the same blocks some with alternate blocks. and by coloring the blocks in EQ and see the fabric requirements on this yellow and pink one, I figured I had exactly enough to make the blocks the same and not scrappy.
I even had scraps for another owl!
here it is before ironing it all down
after ironing it down and button hole stitching on the machine all the way around!

and here mostly sewn together without being stuffed in front of the matching KIT, I don't think I will stuff it and let someone else do it if they want and give away with the completed quilt.

I also got a phone call from one my son's friend's mom from school that he's having a birthday party this sunday! I asked for favorite colors and found out they were blue and yellow.
I looked in my stash and I really don't have large chunks of fabrics in those colors!
BUT! I did have two FQs left over from that bunny table runner, PERFECT! I added some scraps of white and the owl is actually a sparkly white, but it looks cute, ready to stuff and sew together!
My son thinks they are great gifts.

My son got a DSi for his birthday in august, recently he figured out this kaleidoscope setting for taking pictures, then the other day we put it on a SD card and i downloaded them, he had taken some cool pics of my quilts!!

more owls, using scraps and doing nothing with a tooth ache!

I figured I'd post at least a little, this week I have actually been doing NOTHING, home in bed with a severe tooth ache, thought it was a tooth I had a root canal done about 6 months ago, but it's not, still in pain since sunday, it's now friday and my first functional day, my cheek is all swollen, I'm on antibiotics and pain meds, first round of pain meds - one doesn't work well another made me sick as a dog, so now I'm on something else, we'll see how it goes and how my weekend goes, now at least I can handle the pain, but the swollen cheek, it looks like someone punched me in the face!

Okay on to quilting stuff

Here's another set of hot pads and a stuffed owl.
I showed these on a hinterberg -yahoo group and everyone asked where I got the patterns.
Well, the stuffed owl was from fons and porter nov 2010, was supposed to be made out of wool, but I made the first one out of scraps of cotton and loved it! it's meant to be a pin cushion, but kids use them too so now I just have a piece of cardboard inside but no weight inside ( used to be a pouch of rice)
the pot holders, I looked around for an approx size and picked 7 1/2" then I used my accuquilt and heat n bond, the large circle on the GO! is cut in half for the wings, the medium is the outer eyeballs, the small is the middle part of the eyes and the center of the eye I used a bobbin.. simple!
this time I turned the hot pad inside out instead of adding binding, and I really like that!

Here's some fabrics I got last week from fabric.com plus insulbright for the hot pads and cording for my little baskets, all the fabrics are ready to wash.
I just had to show this picture of our sky the other night, a night or two after Lee came thru NC, which just brought some rain.

I finally finished quilting and binding this scrappy star accuquilt go! quilt, it turned out larger than I had in mind but i knew that when I laid it out on the design wall...
here I tried to use UGLY fabrics too, it looks great though.
recognize some of this? the fabrics I showed above and the pattern is for a wall hanging from a recent magazine, there's more to it, this is just a preview :-)

this circle quilt has been on the frame for about a week, imagine that! with this tooth ache, I was pretty much in bed on just playing on my laptop all week, it stinks to be in pain! never been in this much pain since giving birth! okay, enough pity party......
the backing for this quilt was part of the fabric.com package I got last week, I picked this white background with little specks of blue, when I looked at it, it reminded me of tic tacs, and the circles could be mints?! so I'm naming it " tic tacs and mints" I'm not sure what or how to quilt it but I have some ideas....
last weekend I also looked at my go cutter and the paper with different blocks and I decided to print some out in EQ and then make kits for my guild for donation quilts, each block will be 12" so I did a 3 x 4 block layout and then added the rest of the matching fabrics in the baggie, whoever will piece it together can use that for borders or whatever they want..... a nice way to use up scraps.

owls and flames and baskets, oh my!

Owls and flames and baskets, oh my!
I have been busy working with kits, working with scraps and quilting my neighbors quilt.

am I early for easter or late? well it was a kit from connecting threads, the top was quick to put together.

I didn't put eyes on the bunnies yet, I will use these mini buttons instead.
this was the original kit and I LOVE colors but these colors were just way BRIGHT and I didn't think they went well with the other fabrics so I modified the pattern and have 7 FQs left over!

I made another little basket out of left over veggie tales fabric, then I ran out of the cording, which is on order and due for delivery tomorrow!

ended up being a LITTLE basket, but still cute.

I wanted to show a picture of my fabric stash, i don't think it's THAT much, how about you? do you have more or less?

okay, so from the left over fabrics from the easter tabler runner I made another stuffed owl AND another set of pot holders, where I used the same inside out technique and the veggie tales pot holders, all turned out cute!

Lastly, this is my neighbors quilt, I think it's a TAKE five pattern using batiks.

it's hard to tell but I quilted these long flames on the borders - inspired my leah day's 365 filler designs, love her blog!
here's a link

the skinny border I did this cornstalk loop design i've done lots of times.

then I did a flame design as a filler, which was new to me, again inspired my leah day.

and here's the back of the quilt
