I had a friend email me yesterday with this fun question.
If you were a quilt block which one would you be????
I was thinking about a log cabin, I'm part traditional but the block also fits with many things and can be old or new looking, I just like log cabins! another one I thought of was a happy block and that made me think of a flower appliqued block- sort of like my sampler for CCCC.... it just makes you smile...
which one are you

CCCC beginner's class
The beginner's quilting class I taught at CCCC this summer is over and here's a picture of the ladies who finished their quilts ( minus binding folded over which they do at home)
They each used the yellow brick road pattern, great for beginners
I brought in my embroidery machine and made them labels during the last class
Hopefully some of them will continue on to the sampler class!

the class will be for 8 weeks on thursday nights....
I purchased the fabrics from fabric.com, from a distance they do kind of blend together, but it looks really cute close up
each class will be a little bit harder than the last one and the students will learn new techniques in each class
here is a simpler pinwheel- i think that's class #2
log cabin class 1

monkey wrench block, showing how different triangles can be used
simple nine patch within a nine patch, class 1
paper pieced kaleidoscope- one of the later classes
drunkards path cut out with a plastic template that I'm bringing to class
different triangle star block
another kaleidoscope block using the smart plate quilting template
flying geese
paper template house

Dolphin custom Quilt
I have a friend from my kid's school that wanted a baby quilt made.
With emails going back and forth and me downloading pics from fabric.com into EQ, we finally agreed on a design. it turned out great :-)

This was the completed quilt
close up of the block, and quilting, the dolphin fabric was really cute and i quilted waves and swirls.
a yellow border and corner really makes it pop ( it's not crooked that's the picture or the angle I took the picture)
the EQ layout, I turned the triangle blocks on every other row to sort of look like everything was on point on the final quilt
I saw this FUN wave fabric for the backing an also made a label

making patterns
While the sun is so nice and my kids are in the pool, I finally got around to turning some of my EQ files into pdf patterns, I also FINALLY got paper piecing patterns into a pdf file, AWESOME!
I do want to get some feedback on some of these, so I figured I'd post something here.
This first pattern is called berry squares
okay it didn't.... :-( if anyone knows how to let me know or email me if you want the pattern :-)
I tried photobucket and picasa, hmm nothing works, just email me....
OR... wait, maybe my website can link it..

January BOM Pine Tree Quilt guild
I'm part of a local quilt guild and once a month they have a BOM, in january I made my block and brought it in, then I also WON all the blocks back. awesome!! plus a few scraps of the gold fabric, I brought them home and looked in EQ for idea on how to lay it out, I decided on sashing, also because some blocks I had to trim down, then I also decided on the tiny triangle in the corner of the blocks exept the two corner blocks only have one corner block, all I had to buy was border and backing and binding fabrics....
I finally got around to quilting this thing.
Just did an all over swirly pattern
I do love this quilt now it's so much fun, I have figured out that this one plus the red/white and blue quilt I'm going to donate to Heartland hospice in raleigh, I just have to quilt the red/white and blue one..

teacher gifts portfolio, mini quilt and owls
finally I can show my little projects I've been working on.
gifts for my kids teachers, they got them yesterday at both classroom parties.
the owls were from a fons and porter quilt magazine from december 2010 I think, the portfolios I got the pattern as part of a kit from connecting threads, and the mini quilt was in a recent quilt magazine too, BH & G Quilting, page 78.
I had asked the teacher's what their favorite colors were and my son's teacher and TA both liked purple, my daughter's teacher liked brights and pink and green and her TA like green and blue :-)
they all loved them.

follow the yellow brick road
I finished another quilt, my neighborhood has a monthly crafty/quilt meeting so I often save up quilts with binding to be hand sewn on while we talk, anyways, I finished more than half of the binding yesterday and the rest last night while watching TV.
the pattern is another one block wonder, a while ago I went to a small local fabric store and bought the blue oz fabric, just 1.5 yds I think it was, I measured the repeat and needed 6 repeats, then went home and cut everything out and sewed them together later and designed the layout, then on fabric.com I ordered the border fabrics and backing fabrics and I had more of the slipper fabric so I pieced that with the backing.
it's a fun and funky quilt I think, not exactly what I had in mind or hoped for with the blocks but it's still fun, now I know the background fabric can't have a solid color for this technique, my other one turned out much nicer, but you live and learn, it's still fun.

the main part I quilted a swirly simple meandering
also meandered in the corners but did ruler work/ straight lines on the yellow border
a leaf vine on the flower border

circles quilt options
Finally I finidhed appliqueing 30 blocks with circles, I used the large circle die from my accuquilt set and punched out the circles in ricky tims stable stuff and then needle turn appliqued them onto these blocks.
now is it a big NO NO to put a modern print on top of batiks?? I like the way it looks, the batiks or at least one of them has dots on it too in a sort of modern way.
anyways, now I can't make up my mind on the layout, I had it planned one way in EQ but now that I've played with it on the design wall, I don't know what to do....
which layout do you like?

patriotic quilt plan
I know I've been quiet for a while but I HAVE been busy quilting :-)
just some are Shhh ! so don't tell, I will have to wait a few more days to show what THAT is.
meanwhile, I worked on a bargello quilt, I've made this one pattern from "TWIST on bargello" many times, I decided to use some patriotic fabrics I had bought before july LAST year, so I figured I would use it now, but then when I sewed the blocks together I thought that the fabric being directional would not work with twists and turns, so I changed the layout, it was supposed to be 6 x 6 blocks but I'm doing 5 x 7, so only "wasted" one block. Might use that for the back or a label, who knows...
anyways this is the layout so far and close up of the block.
this is what it was supposed to look like- the layout.
with the directional fabrics I think it would just look wierd
I also have no plans for this quilt so I guess I will donate it so then a lap quilt for a veteran or something like that would be good..... Either my guild- which has contacts to veterans or my church that goes to a nursing home once in a while. we'll see, once I get a border on it too.
